Virginia Tech Women’s Club

1965-2022

The Virginia Tech Women’s Club was organized in 1965 when a small group of women recognized the need for an organization that would bring together faculty women and wives of staff members both active and retired. The purpose of the group was strictly social—an effort to help the women become better acquainted and promote fellowship.

Originally known as the VPI Faculty Women’s Club, about 350 women (often referred to as charter members), joined the new club and elected officers in that first year (1965-1966).

Over time, the club has experienced change:

  • In 1971, after VPI became popularly known as Virginia Tech, the name was changed to Virginia Tech Faculty Women’s Club.

  • In 1972, the scholarship program was initiated and funds were raised through cookbook sales.

  • In 2017, the club adopted its current name—Virginia Tech Women’s Club—to reflect the inclusive nature of its membership. Also, the purpose of the club was broadened to include expanding the intellectual and social horizons of its members, providing scholarships, and promoting the interests of Virginia Tech.

  • In 2018, the club expanded its commitment to service by creating a volunteer program which focuses on food insecurity, childcare, and outreach.

  • In 2019, the club launched a new website which gave additional methods to be engaged with the community and members

  • In 2020, the club adapted to new gathering formats and met the needs to offer virtual gathering for meetings and events. Social media visibility under the club’s new name were created along with establishing brand and marketing guidelines.

  • In 2021, areas of scholarship donations, service projects, and educational speakers grew significantly. More scholarships were awarded from the growth in donations. Service projects focused on food insecurity and outreach grew in diverse ways through relations with Virginia Tech Engage, Women’s Resource Center, local food pantries, and individual member founded local community outreach.

  • The club continues to monitor and reflect on ways our members can engage with each other and support the mission of Virginia Tech and the surrounding community.
